Rum to be cheaper for SSB men in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand cabinet on Monday decided that rum would now be made available at concessional rates to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel as it is for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) men.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, state chief secretary Indu Kumar Pandey said the move would cost the state exchequer an annual loss of Rs 1.51 crore in terms of ex cise duty.

The cabinet meeting also declared that the Vidhan Sabha session, which was held from December 15 to 19, had concluded .

Pandey said the cabinet approved the rules for the Uttarakhand Prevention of Public Property Defacement Act, 2003. Under this Act, the district magistrate could issue notices to people who were guilty of defacing public property and private houses. If the person to whom the notice was issued did not rectify the da mage within one week, the DM could get the restoration done and charge the guilty person concerned.

The cabinet decided to hike by 5% the amount of money paid by brick kiln owners to the government under the compounding scheme where by brick kiln owners give a fixed amount of money (one- time payment) instead of the 4% VAT. There are 263 brick kilns in Uttarakhand and in the 2007-08 season, most of them adopted the compounding scheme.

So far, a sum of Rs 170 was paid to the government for every thousand bricks brought in from outside the state. Now, the cabinet has proposed that this amount should be increased to Rs 180 per thousand bricks.
