Uttarakhand govt orders killing of 'man-eating' tiger

A red alert was sounded in tiger sanctuaries across the country to look out for poachers last week, but now the Uttarakhand government has issued orders to kill a tiger that they claim has turned into a man eater.

A 45-year-old woman Bhagwati Devi was allegedly killed by a tiger when she had gone into the protected buffer zone surrounding the Corbett National Park to collect firewood. Going into the forest is illegal but villagers are now gunning for the tiger.

Declaring a tiger a man eater is an elaborate process and should be done after thorough investigation but the warrant comes at a time when tigers are under increased threat in the last four months, 12 tigers have been killed or found dead in national parks across the country prompting the Centre to declare a red alert for poachers in 17 states.

This is the order by the Chief Conservator of forests of Uttrakhand ordering that the tiger be captured or killed. The Centre is clearly worried over the haste in which these orders are being issued.

"We rushed to the site the moment we got to know about the attack. Higher authorities have been informed for further investigation and prevention of further slaughter," said D S Rawat, Warden, Corbett Park.

There are just 1400 tigers left in the wild in India and as the battle for shared resources between tiger and man intensify. The big cat is clearly not burning bright.
