'Chardham Yatra' halted, incessant rains in U'khand

Dehradun, Sep 10 (PTI) The 'Chardham Yatra' in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand has been suspended following landslides triggered by incessant rains at several places on the highways to the pilgrimage spots, official sources said today.

Landslides struck roads and highways at several places enroute to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, blocking the movement of vehicles, said sources in the Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre (DMMC) here.

Personnel of the Public Works Department and Border Roads Organisation have been pressed into service to clear the debris from the roads, they said.

Falling of boulders from the hills due to the heavy rains in Narendranagar town of Tehri district was also reported.

The state has been lashed by widespread showers during the past 24 hours with capital Dehradun recording 102.5 mm rainfall, Mukteshwar 94.1 mm and Dharchula in Kumaon 60 mm, the Met office said here
