VARANASI: The Shankaracharya of Gowardhanmutt Peethpuri, Swami Nishchalanand Saraswati, accused the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of cheating the countrymen on the issue of the Ganga. He said until the policy and motive of the government became clear, the country would have to face the problems of terrorism and naxalism. He said 'reservation' and 'concessions' are affecting the working capacity of the countrymen. He criticised the managers of Mahakumbh for converting the holy occasion into a mela (fair).
The Shankaracharya arrived in the city on Saturday night. Before leaving for Hardwar, he spoke to reporters on Sunday. The seer lashed out at the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and BJP government at Uttarakhand for 'killing the Ganga'. He said despite knowing the cultural and spiritual importance of the holy stream, the Uttarakhand government was constructing over 500 dams before Tehri to generate energy for commercial gains. And, the Congress-led Central government was giving full support to the Uttarakhand government. He held it shocking that despite having other sources of power generation, only the Ganga was being targeted.
The Shankaracharya was not very hopeful that the seer fraternity congregating at Hardwar on Mahakumbh could launch any decisive movement for saving the Ganga. "The 'Akahadas' have not been the army of Shankaracharyas for the past nine decades. The seers who are promoted by capitalists and political parties have become dominant. The genuine and real Shankaracharyas are not being given due importance," he claimed. Despite knowing such ground realities, the government was aiming to keep the seer fraternity satisfied and silent till the end of Mahakumbh. After that the Mahakumbh would culminate and seers would return to their places without making any hue and cry on the issue of the Ganga. He said Mahakumbh used to be the occasion for spiritual thinking for the seers but now the noisy atmosphere did not allow meditation. He said he was going to Hardwar as absence of genuine seers would allow 'anti-social elements' to mislead the innocent people.
Reacting on the issue of reservation for Muslims in government service, he said he was against any kind of caste and community-based reservations. He said reservations and concessions should be given to people with farsightedness. Chhattisgarh started providing food grains to poor at nominal price due to which people started misusing the concession by not working for 30 days a month as their weekly earning was sufficient to procure meal for a month. Liquor addition also increased among them, he pointed out.
He alleged that as policies and motive of parties governing the country, as well as the Opposition, were unclear, the country was facing the problem of terrorism and naxalism. Until the political parties stopped doing the vote bank politics, the country would have to suffer those problems. The Shankaracharya held attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra the result of narrow-mindedness of leaders of some regional parties. He pointed out who could teach a lesson to those who were not ready for introspection.
