New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI) Bowing to pressure from environmentalists, the government has scrapped two proposed hydel projects on the river Bhagirathi in Uttarakhand and suspended work on another mega project in the state.

"We have decided not to go ahead with the Bhaironghati and Pala-Maneri power plants to ensure free flow in the river in Uttarakhand," Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters here.

The Bhaironghati project was expected to generate 381 MW of power while the Pala-Maneri project's proposed capacity was 480 MW. Work on the 600MW Loharinag-Pala project was suspended pending a decision.

The step has been taken in keeping with the sentiments of locals and environmentalists who have been alleging that a large number of proposed and ongoing power projects were threatening the existence of the river besides disturbing the human habitat in the region.
