German group promotes responsible tourism in Uttarakhand

Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS) The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) has joined hands with German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) to promote responsible tourism in the Himalayan state by implementation of a Regional Economic Development (RED) Programme.

The RED programme is an initiative of Indo-German economic cooperation between India and Germany.

UTDB officials at the ongoing Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) in Kolkata said on Saturday the programme aims to improve the overall socio-economic environment for fostering a more inclusive growth with market oriented approach.

The RED programme has a strong focus on developing strategies that aim to improve upon the overall attractiveness of Uttarakhand as a potential destination for tourism and investment.

The partnership of UTDB with GTZ will help to develop a joint regional marketing strategy for the state of Uttarakhand.

Through this partnership, both private and public sector stakeholders of tourism in Uttarakhand will benefit from a variety of technical resources / professional expertise available with both Government of Uttarakhand as well as the RED Programme.

One of the principal aims of GTZ is to nurture the growing awareness of responsible tourism.

In more than 30 countries, GTZ conducts a multiplicity of projects affecting the tourism sector. They are largely assigned to the focal areas of economic development, management of natural resources and biodiversity, resource efficiency, vocational education and regional development

A symbol of national unity, and world famous for its various pilgrimage destinations of different religions, Uttarakhand, better known as Devbhoomi, has a special place on the tourism map of India.

The famous Char Dham destinations - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath provide the gateway to the Mansarovar Yatra.

Uttarakhand is also home to popular destinations like Nainitaal, Mussoorie, Ranikhet, Almora, Pithoragarh, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Valley of Flowers, Corbett National Park, Rajaji National Park etc.

In 2009, Uttarakhand attracted 231.54 lakh domestic and 1.18 lakh foreign tourists.

Apart from being a popular religious destination, Uttarakhand has major scope to become a hot adventure destination. The state has 83 summits for mountaineers, and 123 trekking routes for trekkers.
