Efforts on to find missing trekkers

KOLKATA: The Bengal tourists stranded in Uttarakhand due to bad weather have returned safely, but nine trekkers from the state who had gone to Kalindi Pass and Dhumdharkandi Pass are still missing.

A rescue team from the state is conducting search operations along with the Army. The government has blamed tour operators for "misguiding" the tourists, knowing well that weather conditions would be adverse.

Civil defence minister Srikumar Mukherjee, who had gone to take stock of the situation on the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border along with Sunderbans affairs minister Kanti Ganguly, returned on Sunday. "All the tourists have returned. However, the two teams that had gone to Kalindi Pass and Dhumdharkandi Pass are still missing," Mukherjee said.

Three of the eight-member team that had gone to kalindi Pass Anal Das, N P Rao and Arun Adak are from the state. All six members of the other team which has gone to Dhumdharkandi Pass are from Bengal. They are Sikha Das, Animesh Ghosh, Tanmoy Bhattacharya, Jayanta Ghosh, Amit Das and Pradip Bose.
