Insurance cover for Uttarakhand school students

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government would provide insurance to the students of the government schools of the state. The government has taken this decision after the recent tragedy at Sumgarh in Kapkot tehsil where a government school fell down due to the landslides killing 18 students. Another factor is that the state falls in highly seismic zone and is prone to calamities.

The scheme would cover 17 lakh children of the government schools of the state upto class 12.

The students would have to pay a nominal premium for this and the rest of the dues would be borne by the state government.
Uttarakhand witnessed widespread natural calamities this year and the state government has sought Rs 21,000 crore compensation package from the centre. The centre has already announced a package of Rs 500 crore for the damages.

Hundreds of schools in the state are said to be in a dilapidated condition due to the calamities and the state government has planned to repair them on priority basis.

In case of death of any student due to accident or calamities, the parents would receive the insurance money which would be between Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh.

According to State School Education Minister Govind Singh Bisht, proposals have been sought from the insurance companies for running the scheme. He says that the premium amount charged from the students would be very nominal.
