Makar Sankranti being celebrated in country today

Makar Sankranti festival is being celebrated in several parts of the country today. It will also be celebrated tomorrow in many areas.

In Uttar Pradesh, thousands of people have gathered for a holy dip at Sangam in Allahabad since morning. The Makar Sankranti bathing will continue tomorrow. According to mela administration, pilgrims are taking holy dip at Sangam and various ghats of the Ganga. Elaborate security arrangements have been made on the occasion.

In Uttarakhand, a large number of devotees are taking holy dip in river Ganga at Haridwar on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. AIR Correspondent reports that the devotees are pouring in from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh, besides Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, popular festival of of Kumaon region Uttarayani also begins today.

In Punjab, Maghi festival is being celebrated today. A large Sikh congregation is being held at Muktsar on this first day of Magh month of Vikrami era. This festival is observed in the memory of 40 martyrs of Sikh history, who sacrificed their lives while fighting with Mughal army.
In West Bengal, lacks of people have gathered at Ganga Sagar - the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bay of Bengal to take a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti today.

In Andhra Pradesh, Makara Sankranthi festivities commenced with people celebrating Bhogi today with traditional fervor and gaiety. AIR correspondent reports that the three-day post harvest festival is being celebrated across the state.
