Ramnagar is a small town and municipal board in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India. It is located approximately 65 kilometers (40 mi) from Nainital, the headquarters of the district.

Ramnagar is the gateway to the Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest National park and a famous tourist destination of India. Garjiya Devi Temple and Seeta Bani Temple located nearby also attract many visitors.

History

The town was established and settled by Commissioner H. Ramsay in 1856-1884. During the British Rule tea gardens were developed in Ramnagar and nearby villages in Uttarakhand. But these tea gardens have been closed since a long time. The nearby Jim Corbett National Park is named after the hunter turned conservationist Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment. It is the oldest national park in India and attracts lots of tourists from India and other countries.

It is also the commencement point of Kumaon Hills with the nearby town of Haldwani. Ramnagar is also famous for International "Litchi farming". There is a Kosi Barrage in Ramnagar.

Jim Corbett National Park Jim Corbett National Park Corbett National Park is 51 km north of Ramnagar. Established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park, Corbett National Park is the oldest and one of the most sought after national parks in India. It is India's first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger. The park was named after the hunter-naturalist turned author and photographer, Jim Corbett who lived in the region and contributed in setting up this park. Visitors can move about in vehicles inside the park area after making entries at the respective gates. Tourists can drive their own cars inside Corbett or can hire vehicles from Ramnagar. Permits are necessary for entering Corbett Tiger Reserve. For day visits, permits are obtained at the respective Entry Gates. However, permits for night halts are issued at the CTR Reception Office at Ramnagar.

Garjiya Devi Temple

Garzia Temple Enroute to Dhikala at about 10 Kms. from Ramnagar there is a huge rock perching out of the Kosi river bed. On the pinnacle there is a beautiful temple of Durga Devi named as Garjia Devi. One has to climb a huge number of narrow stairs to reach the temple. An enchanting view of river Kosi can be seen from the top of the rock. It is a good place for bathing, basking, worship & lunch enroute to Corbet park.

Garjiya Devi Temple is situated on a huge rock amid the River Kosi, 14 km from Ramnagar. It is a very famous temple and a large fair is organized at this Shakti shrine on Kartik Purnima that draws a large number of pilgrims and devotees. It is said that a couple has to go in that temple to take the blessings of the Garjiya Maa who is the presiding deity.

Seeta Bani Temple Seeta Bani Temple is dedicated to Devi Sita, consort of Lord Rama. It is believed that she entered into the lap of Mother Earth here. Every year, a fair is held here during Ramanavami. It is located at a distance of 20 km from Ramnagar.

Other places worth visiting in the region are the Crocodile Pool, Dhikala Machaan, Getheryo Library (Dhikala), Corbett Museum (Dhangadi gate), Corbett falls.

An ancient temple of Garjia Devi is worth a visit. Ramnagar is 30 kms. from Kaladhungi, 13 kms, from Ramnagar on the way to Dikhala Garjia Devi temple is situated on a huge rock in the midst of river Kosi. A large fair is held here on Karthik Purnima. It's a small boondock named after "Garjiya Devi Temple". The temple here is sacred place of pilgrimage or devi ka mandir (temple of Goddess) built over a mammoth rock in the centre of Kosi River.

A daily worship is offered to the temple goddess who is believed to protect her followers of all bad omens. A unique belief of the locals residing here is that the temple never submerges even during heavy floods, and is supposed to have existed for years without being effected. The sanctum sanctorum showcases its best during Kartik Poornima Fair, held once a year.
