Asian Development Bank agrees to invest Rs 250 crore for developing tourism projects in Uttarakhand

In a meeting held recently with Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to invest Rs 250 crore for developing various tourism projects in Uttarakhand. According to official spokesperson, ADB in association with UTDB will develop tourism projects in Dehradun, Pithoragarh and Tons River area in the state. ADB and UTDB will also develop various Adventure Tourism activities such as skiing, water sports, rafting, wildlife and other tourism infrastructure facilities in these places.

UTDB is currently seeking proposals from private parties to develop tourism infrastructures such as resorts, five-star hotels, convention centres, ropeways at different places in the state under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model initiative, in order to promote tourism in the state. UTDB is also looking at developing places such as Tehri Lake and Terai Belt.

UTDB in process of developing five ropeway projects in state through PPP model

The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) is in the process of developing five ropeway projects through Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in the state. The construction of the projects will be on Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. According to a UTDB official, Uttarakhand Infrastructure Projects Company (UIPC) has been appointed as the consultant for developing ropeway projects at Dehradun – Mussoorie; Thuligad-Purnagiri and Janki Chatti – Yamunotri routes. While Uttarakhand Infrastructure Development Company Limited (U-DeC) has been appointed as the technical consultant to build ropeway projects at Ramwada – Kedarnath and Rishikesh – Neelkanth routes. The ropeway projects will range from one kilometre to ten kilometre. UTDB is expecting to complete these projects within two and half years. Currently, initial paper work is being carried out for these projects.

In order to find developers for these projects, UTDB recently announced Request for Qualification (RFQ). As per the RFQ, selected developers will be responsible for design, construction, finance, development, operation

UTDB to launch a quarterly newsletter to promote tourism in the state

To promote tourism in the state, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) has decided to launch a quarterly newsletter by end of this month. It is planning to launch the newsletter prior to the announcement of elections in the state. According to K. P. Sharma, Chairman, IATO Uttarakhand Chapter, who is also the editorial member of the upcoming newsletter, the main objective of bringing out the newsletter is to promote tourism in the state. It will focus on revealing achievement of UTDB in the past and present, as well as information about various tourism products in the state. It will also introduce a new district and new destinations in Uttarakhand with every issue of the newsletter.

For active tourism promotion in the state, UTDB will send this newsletter to tour operators across the state and foreign missions in India. According to Sharma, currently in Uttarakhand, Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) is promoting Adhi Kailash in a big way. It is a trekking route located partly in the Kailash Mansarovar direction. This place is known with the name of legendary characters of Great Mahabharatha,

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board to promote Niti Valley

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) recently decided to promote Niti Valley (located in the state on the old trade route to Tibet). K P Sharma, who is a member of the Board and also IATO chapter Chairman of Uttarakhand, conducted a detail study on Niti Valley and has suggested the addition of infrastructure like small tourist rest house, artificial lake and camping facilities for better promotion of the place. As a result, the state government is working on the development and promotion of the Valley. Sharma has also sought support of the central government by sending a letter to S. Banerjee, Secretary Tourism, Government of India, requesting assistance to promote the place and provide it with good infrastructure.

The new destination, Niti Valley, which has been recently opened to foreign and Indian tourist, has a wide range of interesting features to showcase. According to Sharma, villagers of Niti Valley practice an interesting hospitality custom-two families of the village take over the responsibility to offer daily prayers to the village deity for a year.
