The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) for sanctioning of projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has approved a new sewerage project for Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.
The project, under the Urban Infrastructure & Governance (UIG) sub-mission of JNNURM, was cleared by the CSMC at its 82nd meeting held here recently under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development.
The Dehradun Sewerage Scheme (Phase I) for Zone L envisages extension of basic service of sewerage system network to all developed areas of the city as per JNNURM norms.
At present, some of the areas in Dehradun are partially sewered but have no sewage treatment facility and sewage is being discharged untreated into open drains, creating unhygienic conditions.
The discharge of untreated sewage is also polluting river Ganges in downstream areas. The project will be implemented by Uttrakhand Payjal Nigam and will be completed in a period of 30 months (March 2010 to August 2012).
The total cost of the project is Rs 62.83 crore, of which the Central share is Rs 31.415 crore, an official press release added.
