Rains hit normal life in Uttarakhand

Incessant rains continued to lash Uttarakhand triggering landslides and most of the rivers flowing at danger level today.

A total of 62 people lost their lives and more than 100 houses have collapsed so far due to heavy rains this monsoon season in different areas in the state, officials said.

While a 62-year-old woman was buried alive when her house collapsed following heavy rains at Pokhari village in Almora district yesterday,a 52-year-old man was killed after the roof of his house fell on him at Vaste area in Pithoragarh district, they said.

Ganga, Yamuna and its tributaries were flowing at danger level in most of the areas in the state, the officials said.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre has issued a red-alert in the entire state in view of the continuous rains.

Meanwhile, landslides occurred at a few places in Garhwal Himalayas due to heavy rains in at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri.

While Rishikesh-Gangotri highway was blocked by landslides at Bhatwari and Nalupani and Rishikesh-Badrinath at Lambagad, routes to Yamunotri was disrupted at Ranachatti and Kedarnath at Gaurikund, the officials said.

Work is on to clear the debris and repair the roads.

According to the Meteorological Department forecast, moderate to rather heavy rains would continue to lash Uttarakhand tomorrow. Moderate rains are expected at many places while isolated places might receive rather heavy rainfall.
