Dehradun: Uttarakhand would soon have its own Human Rights Commission. The Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand NS Napalchyal has set up a committee to explore the setting up of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
The SHRC would come into existence based on the recommendations submitted by this committee only.
Recently the National Human Rights Commission had asked nine states including Uttarakhand to set up their own Human Rights Commissions.
It is notable that 19 states of India already have their SHRCs. The central government has provided a clause in the protection of Human Rights Act that the state governments, if they deem fit, can set up their own Human Rights Commissions.
A writ had also been filed in the Uttarakhand High Court over the delay in setting up of this commission in the state.
The committee to be headed by the Chairman of the State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA) Justice Shambhunath Srivastava will decide over the modalities.
There are eight other members in the committee including the Additional Chief Secretary (Social Welfare), Director General of Police (DGP), Principal Secretary (Home), Principal Secretary (Labour), Principal Secretary (Justice), Secretary Women and Child Empowerment, Additional Secretary Home and IG Prisons.
