Lansdowne -Uttarakhand




Lansdowne was founded in 1887 by Lord Lansdowne. Lansdowne was originally one of the most favorite hill stations of the British. Surrounded by thick forests of oak and blue pine, Lansdowne is a charming hill destination devoid of the usual hustle bustle other hill stations. Perched at a high altitude, Lansdowne is one of the best places to spend a serene and calm vacation in Uttarakhand.

The calm environ of the place, coupled with a blissful ambience would surely prove to be a respite for people, boggled down with the chaotic life of big cities. Lansdowne is set amidst lovely surroundings – tall oaks and blue pines rise like spires off the mountainside. The forests are lovely, dark and deep, just ideal for those long walks and picnics.

There are amazing mountain views of the Western Himalayas from a number of vantage points like Snow View and Tiffin Top. Lansdowne lies on the Kotdwar-Pauri road in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttaranchal. The hill station is 295 km from Delhi. The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant – 25 km from Dehradun and 125 km from Lansdowne. The closest railway station is 45 km away at Kotdwar, a drive of 2 hours.
Local Attractions

The War Memorial at the Parade Ground of the Garhwal Rifles Center is an attraction for the visitors. Places of interest around the city are Tip-n-Top (org. Tiffin Top), Santoshi Mata Temple, Regimental Museum, Bhulla Taal, St. Mary's Church, Lover's lane. The excursions from the city are Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple, Bhairav Garhi temple etc. Annual ‘Sharadotsav’ (Festival of Autumn) is also organized at this hill station during autumn season. Surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests, Lansdowne has scenic beauty and good surroundings. The climate of the city is pleasant in summer, very cold in winter. Lansdowne can be visited any time of the year.
History

Originally known as, Kaludanda, after Kalun (Black) and Danda (Hill) in local language, Lansdowne was founded and named after then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne in 1887, and by 1901 it had a population of 3943 . Lansdowne was developed by the British for catering for the Recruits Training center of the Garhwal Rifles. Lansdowne was a major place of the activities of freedom fighters from British Garhwal during British period. Nowadays, the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army has its command office here

Temperature varies from 6 to 17°C. October offers an ideal time for exploring the hilly terrains and good for all kinds of tourist activities
