Matbar Singh Rana, a former BJP member who had unsuccessfully contested the 2004 Lok Sabha polls on a UKD ticket from Uttarakhand, today returned to the party fold.
Rana, a retired BSF officer, joined the party with scores of his supporters in the presence of Chief Minister B C Khanduri and state president Bachi Singh Rawat. He had parted ways with the party after he was denied a party ticket in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls and contested elections from Tehri seat on a UDK ticket.
Three others - Ravindra Singh Pundir, Virendra Uniyal and Mamta Kukreti - also joined the party along with their supporters. Welcoming the leaders and their supporters in the party, Rawat said the party would be strengthened as the leaders had considerable support among the masses.
Chief Minister Khanduri said joining of so many people in the party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls was a clear indication that people had high hopes from the party. He also expressed the hope that the party would be able to win all the five Lok Sabha seats in the hill state.
