Elephant dies in Corbett Park after being stuck in swamp for days

A tusker was found dead yesterday apparently after being stuck in a swamp for days in the Corbett National Park in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, forest officials said.

According to Corbett Warden U C Tewari, the forest guards in Dhikala zone noticed the carcass of the tusker stuck in a swamp.

Park officials immediately reached the spot and pulled out the body of the tusker from the swamp. All the parts of the pachyderm were intact, including the tusks, he added.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. The age of the tusker was believed to be between 25-30 years and he must have been stuck in the swamp over a week ago, the officials said.

The incident has alarmed the wildlife lovers who were questioning how the incident of a huge animal being stuck in a swamp did not come to the notice of guards for such a long period.
